Ms Smyth was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1984, having obtained her law degree from the University of British Columbia. She articled and remained associated with a mid-sized Burnaby law firm practicing general civil litigation, and family law as well as acting as an agent for the Federal Crown in prosecutions which advanced her trial experience.

Ms Smyth formed Smyth and Company in 1995 emphasizing her expertise in family law. The firm has grown to include four additional lawyers all of whom limit their practice to family law, as well as skilled paralegals and support staff.

Ms Smyth, as the senior litigator in the firm, specializes in complex family law litigation including matters with significant assets, support issues, child related custody, guardianship and parenting plans, as well as complex legal issues.  Ms Smyth has appeared as counsel at all levels of courts throughout the province of British Columbia, including the British Columbia Court of Appeal and has had numerous cases reported relating to noteworthy legal matters. 

Ms Smyth has been an accredited family law mediator since 1996.  She encourages mediation as a cost-effective alternate form of dispute resolution.  She has been a panelist on continuing education courses on various topics related to advanced legal education .  She has also provided community instruction and workshops  in the Tri-Cites area, and is considered a leader in her field.

Ms Smyth is particularly skilled in assisting clients with an assessment of the facts and legal issues.  Her practice is to suggest the most reasonable plan of action for each client based on their individual wishes and needs as well as the best interest of any children, which is always the primary focus.  The plan of action may include a direction to bring about a settlement or other form of consensual resolution, such as mediation.   When necessary Ms Smyth is an accomplished trial lawyer and uses her firms resources for the benefit of her clients to best present their case before the courts.  As senior counsel, she also provides assessments for parties who are considering a different approach to the resolution of their legal dispute.
