Ms Smyth was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1984, having obtained her law degree from the University of British Columbia. She articled and remained associated with a mid-sized Burnaby law firm practicing general civil litigation, and family law as well as acting as an agent for the Federal Crown.
Ms Smyth formed Smyth and Company in 1995 with an expertise in family law. The family law firm of Smyth & Company has grown to include four additional lawyers who are associated in the practice of family law, as well as skilled support staff.
Ms Smyth, as the senior litigator in the firm, has experience in complex family law litigation including matters with significant assets and support issues as well as complex legal issues. Ms Smyth has appeared as all levels of courts throughout the province of British Columbia, including the British Columbia Court of Appeal and has had numerous cases reported relating to noteworthy legal matters.
Ms Smyth has been an accredited family law mediator since 1996 and has been a panelist on numerous continuing education courses related to personal injury, family law mediation and negotiation skills. She has also provided community instruction in the TriCites area, and is considered a leader in her field.
Ms Smyth is particularly skilled in assessing the facts and legal issues in order to create the most reasonable plan for each client. As experienced counsel she also provides assessments for parties who are considering a different approach to the resolution of their legal dispute.
